Government - The Township of Washington, Bergen County is a Faulkner Plan E form of government with an elected mayor and 5 council members.
Population - We are primarily a residential community, with limited commercial and business development. At present, our population stands at approximately 9,200 people. More statistics may be found online by visiting the Census Bureau here.
Transportation - Due to our close proximity to New York City, there are various public transportation options for the commuter. There are both New Jersey Transit buses (165) and trains (in nearby Westwood) that run on a regular basis to New York City. Houses of Worship - There are several religious institutions in the community, including a Catholic Church, Baptist Church, Assemblies of God Church and a Bible church. There are also additional houses of worship in neighboring towns such as an ELCA Lutheran Church in Woodcliff Lake a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and K-8 school in Westwood. Schools - The Township of Washington is part of a regional school system in which we combine with our neighboring town, Westwood, NJ. We have two elementary schools in each town (four all together), a full Middle School (gr. 5-7) in Westwood and the High School (gr. 9-12) is located in the Township (which also houses a pre-school)!. Schlegel Lake - is an enclave of residential homes known as the Schlegel Lake or Washington Lake Association. It is composed of homeowners, on and off the lake, the WLA owns 28 acre Schlegel Lake and the immediately surrounding land, a four acre park on the west side of the lake and two access walkways on the east side. Local Stores - We have a centrally located and convenient shopping center in the community (Washington Town Center), which includes a Fresh Grocer, a movie theatre, Rite Aid drugstore, Amir Jewelers, David's Bagels, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Originals Pizza, Dairy Queen, Fantastic Sam's Hair Salon, Eden Nail Salon, a dry cleaners, stationery store, dance school and many many other small stores and eateries which serve the basic needs of residents. In many cases you can walk to this area, however, from outlying parts of the Township a car is far more convenient. Post Office - The Twp. of Washington has it's own post office located in the rear of the Washington Town Center on Pascack Rd.
